Christmas dinner with the family

Chontelle Thomas
June 25 2023

The cast are busy rehearsing hard and the sets are looking great. For this production we have four new actors appearing for the first time with us. Below is a short bio for each of the cast members of Christmas dinner with the family:

JORDON ZHU - Jason
Jordon is an aspiring Chinese-Australian actor whose love of theatre and film come from their innate ability to connect with others. By day, he’s a corporate slave; but at night, you’ll find him cuddling with his beloved partner and two cats, watching anime or raging over video games

JENNIFER MARSHALL - Isabelle
Jennifer is a young up and coming actor, writer, and comedian. having performed on the stage since she was in school and now continuing that into adult life. Acting has always been a huge part of her life. While she is focused on acting as her career, Jennifer is also a talented seamstress working on her own costume for the stage, working to design and create the finished product.

Jennifer had taken a break from acting while working for the past few years and "A Christmas dinner with the family" is her stage debut in her adult life. Although she has also been working in student films and extras work in recent months, she is working towards a career in TV and film writing and acting.

ZOLTAN SNEAD - Max
I have been performing with Stepping Out for almost 7 years now! Performing on stage is something that fills me with such joy and seeing the audience along for the ride makes it all the better. Alongside performing, I love playing video games, cross stitching and hanging with my friends. So of course, the theatre would be a natural place for me to thrive!

ALISON WINSHIP - Julia
Alison joined Stepping Out Theatre in 2022 with their mid-year production of 4Plays. She portrayed
some eccentric characters including a highly-strung woman mourning the death of her still-living
father, to a sly old Hag.
Most of Alison’s background is theatre involved, with her experiences ranging from stage acting, to
set- and costume- design. She has recently discovered her love of film though, with credits for a few
lead roles in short films over the past year.
When she isn’t working, you can find her with a nose in a book, doting on her pets, or studying her
craft as presented by others – possibly better known as binge-watching the next TV show or movie
that she has discovered…
Alison looks forward to expanding her repertoire in the future, and deepening her relationship with
SOT.

FRANK WIFFEN - Mr Andrews
Apart from roles in school plays, Frank’s first acting appearance was as at the age of 17, in the comedy
“Goodnight Mrs Puffin”, presented by the Taeri Dramatic Society. Frank played the part of Stephen
Parker, a late middle aged and thus comparatively “ancient” character for which extensive “ageing”
makeup and spray on silver hair were liberally applied. Since then Frank has appeared in plays for
various groups particularly, for the last 15 years or so, Stepping Out Theatre in Berowra. He has observed
philosophically that these days the ageing makeup and spray on silver hair are no longer required.

JADE RODRIGUES - Delvine
Jade was inspired to start acting in 2023 after being caught up in a major traffic jam during Ryan Gosling's filming of 'The Fall Guy' on the Harbour Bridge. A current student of the Parramatta Actor's Centre, she was encouraged to join community theatre to build her skills and confidence in the craft. When she isn't acting you'll find Jade hanging out with friends and family, going for long walks, reading, writing and eating copious amounts of chocolate. She has one child, a furr-baby called 'Willow' a ragdoll-X kitty who prefers to be addressed as 'Her Royal Highness, Princess Willow'.

SUZIE KAINER - Mrs Andrews
This is Suzie's first time on stage in awhile, having mostly been involved behind the scenes in the occasional play or musical. Her love of theatre began at school, and was influenced by her mum's early career in opera. Suzie is delighted to be involved in this Stepping Out Theatre production. She definitely prefers living in a pretend mansion and extends a warm invitation to one and all to "pop in", make yourself at home ...and enjoy the show.

MARELIZE DONALDSON - Maude
Local mom of 2, accountant by day and drama queen by night? I did loads of school plays ages ago but nothing since. This is really stepping outside of my usual day to day life.

KARYN WIFFIN - Landlady
Hi, I'm Karyn! I have been part of SOT since around 2006 and am the current SOT Overlord (Chair(wo)man).
I hate long walks on the beach, love my thespian friends and am looking forward to seeing everyone at this amazing show!

We welcome Chontelle Thomas as a first-time director for the group, who will present the Christmas in July programme.
The first production, directed by CR, will be : TELL ME A STORY, a collection of 4 -6 monologues, stories, each told by a single actor on stage, held together by a thread of scripted dialogue, between 2 actors, providing the reason the stories are being told.

We’ve Gone Digital!

Glenn Kershaw
April 15 2020

The future has caught up with us! We’ve finally gone digital. That is, we’ve purchased some new ‘LED’ lights, a control board and some audio equipment. Our old incandescent bulb based lights have served us well, but the trouble was in summer the heat they generate makes our theatre that much more uncomfortable. Of course, it was an advantage in winter.
The new lights are much more flexible two, allowing us to create different colour effects without the use of ‘Gels’ and far better control. We now use the control board or a laptop to run the lights. In the past the lights were controlled by a kit produced by an electronics magazine in the 90s. It was a great kit but times have changed.
The new audio equipment offers us much more flexibility too. We are just waiting for our chance to actually use it in action. Covid, well, we all know about Covid!
